West-Berliner Leselandschaft

Der Artikel stellt die Westberliner Staatsbibliothek in den Mittelpunkt. Ausgehend vom Lesesaal der 1978 eröffneten Bibliothek, der sogenannten Leselandschaft, geht der Artikel den Landschaftskonzepten nach, die für eine Neuausrichtung bibliothekarischer Wissensorganisation in der Nachkriegszeit bedeutsam waren. Die von Hans Scharoun vertretene stadtplanerische Idee der Stadtlandschaft und das kybernetisch aufgeladene Geschäftsmodell der Bürolandschaft fanden Eingang in die Bibliothek, wo sie Praktiken des akademischen Arbeitens prägten. Anhand des vielschichtigen Landschaftsbegriffs lässt sich zeigen, auf welche Weise Bibliotheken orientiert an Prinzipien der Bewegung und der Logistik von Büchern in der Bundesrepublik der 1960er und 70er Jahre ein neues Selbstverständnis entwickelten.

West Berlin Reading Landscapes: The Library as a Logistical Thinking Tool

The article focuses on the West Berlin State Library, which opened in 1978. Starting with the reading room of the library as its «reading landscape,» the article traces the concepts of landscape that helped reorient the organization of library knowledge in the postwar period. Hans Scharoun’s urban planning idea of a Stadtlandschaft (cityscape) and the cybernetically charged business model of the Bürolandschaft (office landscape) made their way into the library, where they shaped academic working practices. The multilayered concept of landscape shows how libraries developed a new self-image in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960s and 70s based on principles of movement and logistics of books.
