Die Schwerpunktausgabe widmet sich Protokollen und beleuchtet ihre vielfältigen Einsatzgebiete, Wirkweisen und Politiken. Sie fragt, was heute von der Vormachtstellung technischer Protokolle Anfang der 2000er geblieben ist, wie sich ihr Stellenwert in digitalen Kulturen verändert hat und ob wir nicht doch vielleicht ein Comeback von Protokollen und Protokollogisierung erleben. Dazu versammelt das vorliegende Heft Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und Fachkulturen, die sich mit der Rolle von Protokollen über verschiedene Medien hinweg auseinandersetzen, mit ihren Ausschlüssen, Ambivalenzen und Überschüssen, mit dem Verhältnis von Protokollen und Standards, den Verschränkungen von Protokollen mit Arbeit(sweisen), Privatheitsdiskursen und dem Sozialen.

Introduction to the Theme of Focus Topic: Protocols

The focus issue is dedicated to protocols and sheds light on their usage, modes of action, and politics. It asks what remains of the privileged role of technical protocols at the beginning of the 2000s, how their significance has changed in digital cultures, and whether we might be experiencing a comeback of protocols and protocolization. To this end, this issue brings together contributions from different perspectives and disciplines that examine the role of protocols across different media, their exclusions, ambivalences, and surpluses, the relationship between protocols and standards, the entanglements of protocols with notions of work, privacy discourses, and the social.
