Heft 22 thematisiert den Formatbegriff aus film- und medienwissenschaftlicher Perspektive: Formate sind technische Maßeinheiten zur Normierung und Verwaltung medialer Anwendungen und Apparaturen; sie beeinflussen die Art und Weise, wie Medien erscheinen, operieren und erfahrbar werden. Introduction to the Theme of Focus Topic. Formats 

Issue no. 22 addresses the concept of format from the perspective of film and media studies. Formats are technical units of measurement used to norm and govern media devices and media applications; they influence how media appear, operate, and become experienceable. Formats thus prompt a reflection upon the linkages between media, recurrent techniques, and their historical continuities and discontinuities. What theoretical potentials does format mobilize, and what are its limitations regarding the understanding of media phenomena? Could format perhaps even represent, under conditions of digitality, a viable alternative to the term medium? What influence do institutional or economic format politics – the politics of format, and the policies by which formats are implemented – exert on the life and afterlife of media objects?
