In den Arkaden der Übersetzung

In diesem Beitrag setze ich mich mit meiner eigenen Position als postmigrantische Frau im universitären und akademischen Kontext auseinander, indem ich nicht nur eine diskursive Selbstreflexivität, sondern auch Blickregime verschiedener Akteur_innen in meine Analyse miteinbeziehe. Mit Bezug auf Rey Chows Überlegungen in «Film as Ethnography; or: Translation Between Cultures in the Postcolonial World» gehe ich Fragen von kultureller Identität, Originalität und Authentizität nach, indem ich die Methode der Autoethnografie mit Benjamins Gedanken zur Aufgabe des Übersetzers erweitere. Anhand Chows Theorien werden alternative, fluidere und transparentere Wege der kulturellen Übersetzung skizziert, die über reduktive Konzepte von Ost und West, Original und Übersetzung, Treue und Verrat hinausgehen.

In the Arcades of Translation. Thoughts on Autoethnography, Cultural Identity, and Authenticity

In this paper, I address my own position as a postmigrant woman in the university and academic context by expanding my analysis to include not only a discursive self-reflexivity but also gaze regimes of different actors. With reference to Rey Chow’s reflections in the essay «Film as Ethnography; or: Translation Between Cultures in the Postcolonial World,» I explore questions of cultural identity, originality, and authenticity by extending the method of autoethnography with Benjamin’s thoughts on «The Task of the Translator.» Using Chow’s theories, I outline alternative, more fluid and transparent ways of cultural translation that go beyond reductive concepts of East and West, original and translation, fidelity and betrayal.
